NORTHERN IRELAND

At the start of the 'Troubles' B Squadron of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards was briefly sent to Belfast in July 1970. After C Squadron returned from Cyprus it was posted almost immediately to Northern Ireland in February 1971. Units of the regiment would continue to serve regularly in Northern Ireland throughout the 1970s.

Stationed mainly in Armagh and Tyrone, the regiment performed a variety of roles, including reconnaissance in Ferret scout cars and infantry patrol. In 1974 it was deployed as the Maze Prison Guard Force and also manned petrol stations during the Ulster Workers’ Council Strike.
