During the war against the Boers of South Africa, the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) and 6th Dragoon Guards fought together in the 1st Cavalry Brigade. Both regiments took part in the relief of Kimberley in February 1900, and the key Boer defeat at the Battle of Paardeberg later that month. Following the disbanding of the 1st Cavalry Brigade, both regiments joined a column commanded by Colonel Edmund Allenby, tasked with pursuing the Boer guerrillas. The 3rd Dragoon Guards were also deployed in South Africa for mopping-up operations in January 1901.
